Open my eyes and ears but close my mouth…

He who answers a matter before he hears the facts-it is folly and shame to him.” Proverbs 18:3

Active listening with an open mind is a difficult task. It is like walking down a wooden staircase with socks on. This happens when we are debating or hearing out a person with a differing opinion than our own. Sometimes we form judgments of a person, we hardly know and won’t give them a chance. This happens with our relationship with the Lord. We want to know the way we are supposed to go now or why something wasn’t answered. Right this second. Instead of waiting and listening, we think or pray-beg ourselves into oblivion to come up with answers quickly.

I was partnered with someone at a church through a women’s ministry. I was not happy I got paired with her. I didn’t know how she was going to help me or guide me. I only had a few experiences with her and they weren’t positive. I wanted a new partner. I wanted to cry. What I needed was a warm cup of shut the heck up.

After I found out about the pairing, I called one of the leaders of the ministry and told her that this wasn’t going to work. I felt guilt for the crummy attitude but thought I would be wasting my time and hers as well. I asked if I should be truthful and tell her some issues I had with her and see if she still wanted to be paired with me. My attitude was awful and ungodly. Thankfully, this leader was filled with Godly wisdom. She said, “God doesn’t do anything in a hurry.” She explained that, the team prayed over every pairing and believed she was the right partner for me. She did not want me to tell her any of my past issues I had with her but to let God take control. She asked for me to see how the first few meetings went and then let her know if I still felt that way.

The experience ended up being one of the best of my life. I learned so much. I grew deeper in my relationship with the Lord. That is what mattered. God will use anybody to further His Kingdom. We may wish to be partnered with certain people and sometimes He will choose someone else, because He knows what we need.

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for every person you have put in my life. Sometimes, I wonder their purpose, so help me to see past my judgments. Remove the blinders and allow me to see people how you see them. Teach me to remain calm to assess situations. If it uncertain, give me patience to give people a chance or allow a way out if it is not of your will. In Jesus’ Name…AMEN!
